Gretchen Hellar was born in Detroit, Michigan,
and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After obtaining
degrees in social work and sociology from Michigan State
University, she taught at the University of Hawaii and
was a Research Associate at the Center for Social
Research and Development located at the University of
Denver.
In 1973, she moved to Kootenai County, where she became

Agency—an agency with the mission of serving low-income
residents of the five northern counties. In 1978, she
co-founded Available Hardware Supply (AHS) with three
partners. AHS grew to 62 employees in 12 years, with branches in Seattle and Boise.
Upon selling AHS, she moved to a cabin on Schweitzer
Mountain, then, in 1993, moved into the City of Sandpoint.
She became active in the arts community, serving as
treasurer of Pend Oreille Arts Council (POAC) and in the
human rights community, where she served as
treasurer and as president of the Bonner County Human Rights Task
Force. She was the first president of the Kinnikinnick Chapter
of the Idaho Native Plant Society and co-chair
of the Sandpoint Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee.
In addition, she pursued her new-found interests in
painting watercolors, sustainable gardening, and experiencing all the joy that living in Sandpoint
provides. |

attended Pepperdine University. Her
early work experience included corporate
management in both retail and restaurant

celebrate the lives and accomplishments
of local women who have been

Justin Schuck |
|
Justin Schuck was raised in
Sandpoint and attended college at
Boise State University and in Germany.
He traveled extensively looking for a
place to settle down. He didn’t have
to travel far to decide that the place
was where he was raised. He is a
partner in a local residential
construction company, Idagon Homes,
which provides employment for about 60
of our community members. He is a
young professional and brings energy,
clear vision, and a willingness to
learn to the City of Sandpoint. He
strives to make sound decisions based
on fact, not emotion. He and his wife
want to raise their future children in
Sandpoint, and he wants them to enjoy
a safe and vibrant community similar
to the Sandpoint where he grew up.
Justin is an avid outdoorsman and
enjoys dirt biking, snowmobiling,
snowboarding, and boating. |
